Surviving family members (spouse and children) of fallen firefighters, who come under this category, can, therefore, benefit from this program.
The financial assistance may be used to pay the fees (tuition and admission fees), hostel accommodation (boarding and lodging), educational tools (books and course equipment) or any other form of education related expenses.
The maximum amount of monthly financial assistance for a full-time student is $881.00 as of October 1, 2007. However, the amount of monthly financial assistance for a part-time student is relatively less. In case a student is getting financial aid or financial assistance from the federal government, then the ceiling of the PSOEA award decreases proportionately.
While there is no age bar for the spouse of a firefighting officer to be eligible for receiving the PSOEA educational assistance, the children of the deceased or disabled firefighting officer are eligible to receive the educational assistance only until they attain the age of 27 years. The spouse can receive financial assistance only for a maximum period of 45 months for full-time higher education but in case they enroll for a part-time educational program, the length of the financial assistance varies proportionately.
In addition to the PSOEA awards, the spouse or children of dead or permanently disabled firefighters may also be eligible for other kinds of educational assistance programs such as the W. H. "Howie" McClennan Scholarship provided by the International Association of Fire Fighters. This program is specifically meant for the children of firefighters who met with death while on duty.
