Oil is formed from the fossil and fuels that is from the dead plants and leaves, algae and bacteria. In some places like the North Sea, oil is found in the rocks, and it could have formed more than 150 million years ago.During the Jurassic era, the sea and swamps were very rich in algae and microscopic plants. The climatic conditions were ideal for oil formation. So, basically oil is formed from the decaying plants and algae at high temperatures and pressure. Also, certain amount of bacterial activity was involved. Oil forms first on the crust of the earth and due to the temperature and the pressure, other gases are formed which pushed the oil deep into the earth.
The layers of mud on the land prevent the air from reaching the organic material lying underneath. As the layers of mud keep on increasing they push the organic material further down and cause pressure. Due to this, the temperature of the organic material also increases. The combination of pressure and heat makes it possible for the formation of oil under extremely diverse conditions.
Though the process sounds very simple it takes a very long time for this process to take place. These days the oil is rare to find because the formation process needs plant decay. Due to the severe deforestation, plant decay is not easy to find. There is no formation of oil also.
