Gold was found in plenty in California, and people, who realized the value of gold and where to find it, started rushing to California in the hopes of getting rich. That is why it is called the gold rush as most people were in a hurry to find this precious metal first.Gold was first discovered in California in 1848 by James Marshall. Within a few months the word spread, and by 1849 California started drawing large crowds looking for gold along the river basins. Some traveled the Oregon and California trail, while others went around South America. Some people even went as far as Panama and Mexico. The gold rush here soon became a world event, and people from France, Germany, Italy, China and Turkey started coming to California looking for gold.

At that time, politically other important events were taking place in the United States too. There was the American Revolution which was coming to an end, and the country was taking shape politically. All the presidents who ruled during the gold rush were important. The most popular president during the gold rush was James Polk. The gold rush lasted from 1848 to 1855.

James Polk was the President until 1849, and he did not seek the office for the second term. Zachary Taylor served as the president of the United States from 1850 to 1851 only, and he died after 16 months in office. Then it was Millard Fillmore who was the president during the rest of the gold rush period in the United States.
