Agricultural Niche Markets
Farming is the oldest occupation known to man. In today’s world of hardships and uncertainties it has become unprofitable to be a farmer. Mankind will always require someone to grow food for its daily food needs or else its very existence will be threatened. These days some progressive farmers are innovating and trying out unconventional methods of farming. |
One of the niche markets being developed by farmers is that of mushrooms. As the mushroom market is growing, more and more farmers are opting to grow them as they have a tremendous earning potential. This is a superb example of innovative thinking. Mushrooms do not require sunlight as they do not use photosynthesis. Instead of large farms they are being grown in cold and dark buildings.
Another thought is that those crops which are unavailable locally during a particular season be made available in that period. For instance, some farmers in the state of New York have successfully grown raspberries during winters. Since these raspberries are fresher than those available in other places, people are more than willing to pay the asking price for it. This makes the cultivation of the raspberries worthwhile for the farmers. Other crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, pepper and muskmelons are also commercially being cultivated in greenhouses.
Due to the increasing cost of transportation and a growing demand for organic food locally grown, many farmers are moving in this direction. Fresh, clean and pesticide free articles can bring higher prices. Many farmers are looking for a change in lifestyle while some just want to save their family farm. There are several niche markets existing for farmers ranging from vanilla orchid to heirloom fruits. Innovation is the only way for farmers to survive in today’s world.
